Safe Refuge?

In 2016 I found myself volunteering in a refugee camp. It was a life-changing experience, showing me the best and worst of humanity and dragging me through a whirlwind of emotions. Most of what I experienced during this time I still struggle to put into words.

Despite the fact that this goes against everything I stand for in a photographic sense all these images were shot on my iPhone. It was just too sensitive a situation with tensions too high to be pushing a camera in someone’s faces. The people did not want to be photographed living in the squalor they are being forced to live in.

However, I felt too strongly about the situation to just be a bystander. I wanted to document as much as I could and raise awareness of such horrific circumstances that so few people get to witness. I hope my photographs give some insight into that.
